Half a Day’s Sales

Pinoy Life

Half day

About five years ago, I was walking along an uncemented sidewalk at noon in Baguio City when I saw this little boy on a street corner. He was selling cigarettes and mint candies under the heat of the midday sun.

I caught him as he was counting half a day’s sales, not even enough to cover his little palm.

Dangwa is

just about a minute away from this point.

I do not remember Jerwin Igama but I recall a customer who goes by the same surname. Maliit lang naman Baguio.

My memory cells must have deteriorated faster...

Is that near where the Philippine Rabbit station used to be before the earthquake? Or is it closer to the Dangwa station? We lived on Magsaysay Ave. right across Baguio Colleges Foundation. Then we moved to Cabinet Hill.

We did not have a post. We wandered yelling "Bulletin!" and "Tempo!". Do you happen to know Jervin Igama? He was my newspaper partner in crime until that one fateful day. My 'garilyo business did not make it out the house, although I had already built my wooden 'garilyo and gum holder complete with separators for all the different coins, hehe...

Bonifacio Cor. Upper Magsaysay

If my rapidly deteriorating memory cells serve me right. Where exactly was your post? :-)

Brings back memories...

When I was growing up in Baguio, it was a "dream" to sell " 'garilyo " and newspapers... I never hit the streets, but I ended up selling cigarettes to my dad. I'd buy boxes of Champion cigarettes and sold him individual packs. I also sold newspapers until my friend got stabbed one day early in the morning right before I was supposed to pick him up to get our supplies. That ended our newspaper career.

Do you by chance remember what street you took this picture?

'nother one!

There you go! Another "Home" photo for the book project. :)
