Day Zero

Submitted by kyo on Fri, 2006/07/21 - 5:50pm.

Last week I was surprised to find eggs on a leaf in our 55-gallon tank. Our koi angelfishes have spawned their first batch of eggs!

I immediately googled on what to expect during the first 7 days and moved the leaf into a smaller tank. Dropped some methylene blue and ran an airstone to circulate the water.

At day 7, the yolk sac is starting to shrink and the eyes and tail are well defined.:

To improve survival rate at fry stage, one of the recommendations was to feed baby brine shrimp but right now all I have is Hikari First Bites. We'll see how many will make it to 3 weeks!

hello jorge,

Sadly i didn't have baby brine shrimp to feed the first batch of wigglers and around the time before i left for my trip we had a really bad heatwave which i suspect contributed to wiping out the first batch.

The good news though is that on August 9th, this pair once again spawned its second batch and today we're on 12th day. We have since ordered baby brine shrimp eggs this time and the survival rate has much improved. These fries are very delicate to water quality and temperature and I've read that without this particular food it would be very difficult to see the fries survive in its first 3 weeks.

Today, August 21 there is a 3rd batch of eggs and we're expecting this to be ready to move to a hatchery tank tomorrow.
